School Groups

The lasting success of the “International Children’s and Young Adult Literature” section is especially thanks to the teachers from Berlin and Brandenburg who, together with their classes in different school subjects, have regularly taken part in readings and workshops since the festival’s early years.

The ilb offers children and teens at all grade levels:

  • Personal encounters with international authors and illustrators
  • Presentations of international children’s and young adult books featuring exceptional stories and artwork
  • Inspiring intercultural exchange
  • Autograph sessions
  • Insights into the professions of writers, illustrators, and translators
  • Unique experiences and lots of fun

Good to know

How much time does the visit of an event take?

A reading lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Afterwards, there is the opportunity for autographs from and photos with the authors, which takes up to 60 additional minutes. Books can be purchased at the book table. Workshops last a total of up to five hours that can also be distributed across several days.

Do the students need any special preparation for a visit at the festival?

Generally, every reading can be attended without any preparation in advance. However, children and teens can more actively participate in and help shape events with ideas and questions if they have already read the respective book or text excerpts. Upon request, we are happy to send you text excerpts, free of charge, that can be of assistance for preparatory and/or follow-up activities.

Which event best fits my class?

The diverse program in this section is available to all grade levels and subject areas. Each event has a non-binding grade level recommendation.

We offer year-round consultation services regarding our program and are also happy to introduce the festival and its program in personal conversations, at school staff meetings, or at parents’ evenings.

Are the events barrier-free?

As a matter of principle, the festival wishes to make it possible for all interested guests to participate equally in its entire program. Many event locations are barrier-free. To check the individual accessibility of the respective venues, please let us know in advance which special needs ought to be considered.
